This is an out-and-back walk along the Aran ridge to the summit of Aran Fawddwy, starting from the small car park in Llanwchllyn at the south end of Bala Lake.
The walk is fairly easy from a navigating point of view, but can be tricky in poor visibility. The walk isn’t too strenuous for the most part, but there are a number of ladder stiles, a couple of steep climbs and a scramble over rocks to the summit of Aran Fawddwy. The views all along are breathtaking and make the effort very worthwhile.
Turn left out of the car park and climb the stile across the road, follow the lane until just after the cattle grid, then take the bridleway to the right. Follow this over a couple more stiles until you come across the footpath off to left, signposted ‘Aran’. Follow the footpath up to Pen Aran, Aran Benllyn, Erw y Ddafad-ddu and finally Aran Fawddwy. Enjoy the spectacular view (weather-permitting) then retrace your steps back to the start.
